Recently I needed to use this new feature VeeaMover from Veeam Backup & Replication v12. In this blog post on How to use the new feature VeeaMover from Veeam Backup & Replication v12, I will explain how to use it and how helpful and easy to use this feature.
What is VeeaMover, and does it work?
With this new VeeaMover feature, you may transfer or relocate backups to multiple places using the VeeaMover functionality included in the new Veeam Backup & Replication v12of Veeam Backup & Replication1.
It might be helpful when you need to modify the target repository for a Backup Job that contains existing backups. This requires human labor and takes time when using the most recent Veeam versions. VeeaMover can copy backups to new repositories, move backups between repositories, migrate backups from NTFS to ReFS, rebalance scale-out repositories, evacuate scale-out repositories, move backups to a different location, and move a virtual machine to a different backup job.
In my case, I need to move all backups from one job from one Backup repository to another. In previous versions, to do this we need to copy all the backups manually and then point the new job to the newly copied Backups. This was something that always took a lot of time and effort. The copy usually has a timeout, and we must restart the whole process again.
With this new excellent feature, it is just a couple of clicks and is done. The time is the time that it takes to copy/move all your Backups from one Repository to another.
Where can we use this feature?
Some examples:
- Change where the files are stored(change Repository)
- Re-balance Scale-Out Repository Extent of Evacuation Scale-Out Repository
- Change from NTFS to ReFS
- Move Backups files to a different place
- Move ReFS to XFS to make your repository more secure(for a Hardened Repository).
How did I move my Backup from one Repository to another?
First, we identify the Backup Job we want to move. In this case, was the Backup Job Full Backup. And we will move from the Full Backup Rep Repository to the Main Backup Repo Repository.
We will go back to the Jobs, and in the Backup job, right mouse click and select the option Move Backup…
Next, we select the Repository we want to move to, and the process starts.
I selected the Main BAckup Repo Repository (which is a ReFS local repository), but we could move to a Cloud Object Storage Repository. In the following image, we ca check that I could move to my Wasapi Repository called Wasabi Main Repo.
As we can see in the next image, the process starts, and some of the VMs backups are already moved to the new Repository.
After a while, all VMs are moved to the new Backup Repository, and now I can decommission the old Full Backup Rep Repository.
The time this process takes, of course, depends on your infrastructure and the amount of data you are moving. If it is many Terabytes, you need to consider a maintenance Window to do this. Since during that time, you cannot backup those VMs.
Conclusion:
In conclusion, the VeeaMover feature in Veeam Backup & Replication v12 is a powerful tool that simplifies the process of migrating virtual machine backups. By seamlessly transferring backups between different infrastructure environments or cloud platforms, this feature offers flexibility and efficiency in managing data and applications.
With VeeaMover, users can easily move or copy their VM backups to on-premises environments, public clouds like Microsoft Azure or Amazon Web Services (AWS), or even different hypervisors such as VMware vSphere or Nutanix AHV. The feature leverages Veeam Backup & Replication’s robust backup and replication capabilities to create compressed, deduplicated, and encrypted backups for secure transfer.
Organizations can efficiently manage their backup data and applications by utilizing VeeaMover, ensuring data integrity and minimizing downtime during migration. This feature empowers businesses to adapt to evolving infrastructure requirements, whether migrating to the cloud or transitioning to a new virtualization platform.
In summary, the VeeaMover feature in Veeam Backup & Replication v12 provides a reliable and effective solution for migrating virtual machine backups. Its seamless transfer process, compatibility across various environments, and ability to convert VM formats prove to be an invaluable tool for organizations seeking flexible and efficient data management solutions.
