In May, Nakivo launched another excellent version of their main product NAKIVO Backup & Replication. In this blog post, NAKIVO Backup & Replication v10.6 what is new. I will show some of the new features and improvements of this new release.
It has passed some time since my last review on the NAKIVO Backup & Replication tool, and a lot of changes since then.
Since my last review, what new features were added?
- v10.5
- VMware Monitoring – This feature allows you to track the CPU, memory, and disk load/usage for VMware vSphere hosts and VMs. NAKIVO Backup & Replication can also monitor disk usage for VMware vSphere datastores.
- Hardened Virtual Appliance – This functionality allows you to create immutable backups in Backup Repositories deployed as part of a virtual appliance. The immutability cannot be unset by any user or process. This provides an additional level of security for your backups.
- Auto-Set API Permissions for Microsoft 365 Accounts – NAKIVO Backup & Replication can now automatically check and set the required API permissions for Microsoft 365 accounts before adding them to Inventory.
- Backup of VM Templates – NAKIVO Backup & Replication can now back up and recover custom VM templates to and from VMware vCenter or ESXi hosts.
- General Tab Facelift – This update also brings a new, more intuitive user interface to the General tab in Settings.
- v10.4
-
- Immutable Local Repository – The Immutable Local Repository feature allows you to make recovery points in a local Backup Repository immutable for a specified period of time. Immutable backups are protected from deletion, modification, and encryption by ransomware.
- Two-Factor Authentication – You can enable Two-Factor Authentication for each user accessing the product web interface. This update provides an additional layer of security against malicious access to backup data by requiring a verification code in addition to the username and password when logging in.
- File Recovery for Nutanix AHV VMs – NAKIVO Backup & Replication now supports file recovery for Nutanix AHV VMs.
-
v10.3
-
- Direct Connect (No-VPN) – The feature allows NAKIVO Backup & Replication installed at MSP/CSP site to access remote resources of an MSP/CSP client via a single port connection (port should be exposed by a client) without the need to establish a VPN connection. Supported platforms: VMware.
- Backup & Recovery of Exchange Online contacts and calendars – Backup and recover Exchange Online contacts and calendars with NAKIVO Backup & Replication.
- VMware Cloud Director Support – The feature allows you to back up and recover VMware Cloud Director objects including:
-
- vApps which consist of one or more VMs that communicate over a network and use resources
and services in a VMware Cloud environment; - individual VMs.
- vApps which consist of one or more VMs that communicate over a network and use resources
-
- Backup from Storage Snapshots – Add HPE 3PAR storage to NAKIVO Backup & Replication to back up VMware VMs from HPE 3PAR storage snapshots. A storage snapshot can be created within seconds, and it consumes a small amount of space which, in its turn, reduces the impact of backup activities on the production environment and improves RPOs.
- User Interface Enhancement (Facelift) – Enjoy the enhanced look and functionality of the NAKIVO Backup and Replication installation and update pages.
- Harden Transporter – The feature allows you to use certificates and pre-shared keys for Transporters to make NAKIVO Backup & Replication more secure.
NAKIVO Backup & Replication v10.6 what is new
In this new version, NAKIVO has added some new features and, continuing from previous versions, a Facelift of the user interface.
Before I go through all the new features, there are some improvements in the UI.
Install:
Now when we install NAKIVO Backup & Replication, there are more options, and we can make those changes at the installation. No need to do it afterward.
Backup Repositories:
You can create more backup repositories in the newest versions using more Object Storage and Storage Appliances.
Transporter:
It is now possible to add more types of Transporters to handle your backup workloads.
Import NAKIVO Backup Server settings:
You can import all the previous configurations to the new server if you are migrating from a previous backup server to a new one.
Monitoring:
And finally, another good new feature is now possible to monitor your devices. You can monitor vCenter, ESXi, VMs, and Datastores. This can be done by adding the type of devices or creating some policy rules to monitor.
Two examples: Monitor a specific VM and a specific Datastore.
Check HERE more about this NAKIVO Monitoring Dashboard.
Note: The monitor option is only available in Enterprise or higher licensing.
New Features
Let us check more in detail each of the new features on this NAKIVO Backup & Replication v10.6.
- NAS Backup
You can now add any shares using the NFS and SMB (CIFS) protocols and back up and restore any of the files on those shares.
Network shares, a common way of accessing data remotely, often contain large numbers of files, whether located on Windows/Linux machines or NAS systems. With NAS Backup, customers can back up entire file shares or specific folders within those shares to a variety of backup targets and recover files and folders to the location of their choice.
The feature supports backup, backup copy and recovery of file shares using the NFS and SMB (CIFS) protocols.
- Backup from HPE Nimble Storage Snapshot
Backup from regular VM snapshots can be time-consuming and resource-heavy in large infrastructures. The new feature provides a more efficient backup alternative for VMware vSphere VMs hosted on HPE Nimble Storage devices.
By creating backups directly from Nimble Storage snapshots, customers have the flexibility of creating more recovery points while saving time and reducing the impact of data protection on production environments.
- Microsoft 365 Groups Support
Microsoft 365 Groups is a cross-application feature that promotes teamwork and powers collaboration across Microsoft’s suite of business apps. The new functionality in NAKIVO Backup & Replication v10.6 allows customers to back up and recover group mailboxes and group sites and quickly restore workflows in case of accidental or malicious data loss.
- External Product Database Support
In this version, 10.6 is now supported by using an external database for the main components instead of a built-in database. By using an external PostgreSQL database, NAKIVO Backup & Replication v10.6 have better performance and reliability while the infrastructure grows.
- Hardened Amazon Machine Image
You can deploy NAKIVO Backup & Replication as a pre-configured Amazon Machine Image (AMI) in Amazon EC2. After completing the download form, you get a link to the AWS marketplace page where you can download the AMI.
