NAKIVO launched a couple of months ago a new version of their primary product NAKIVO Backup & Replication v8.1.
NAKIVO Backup & Replication as improving a lot since my last review. During that time NAKIVO has launched various new features and added more SAN support to their portfolio.
Features added in the latest releases:
- Instant VM Recovery for Hyper-V
- Screenshot Verification for Hyper-V
- Enhanced AWS EC2 Instance Backup
- Instant Object Recovery for Microsoft SQL Server 2017
- Instant File Recovery to source
- Cross-Platform recovery
- EMC Data Domain Boost support
- Support for vSphere 6.7
- Automated Site Recovery and for Cloud Disaster Recovery.
NAKIVO Backup & Replication add these features last year in the version v8. Using Site Recovery provides extra protection to customers. Not only when creating their disaster recovery plans, but also when using Cloud Disaster Recovery by using the 3-2-1 Backup rule.
NAKIVO has also forwarded to a cloud environment with the backup support from AWS EC2 environments and backup copy offsite and to AWS/Azure cloud.
Using Cloud Disaster Recovery Nakivo Backup & Replication provides the following features:
- Automated VM failover
- Backup copy to the cloud
NAKIVO now support direct backup from QNAP, Synology, ASUSTOR, Western Digital, and NETGEAR.
Using your NAS as VM Backup Appliance customers can have better performance by up to 2X and offload IT infrastructure,

What is new in the NAKIVO Backup & Replication v8.1?
- Installation of a TLS/SSL certificate is provided to allow for a secure HTTPS connection for your instance of NAKIVO Backup & Replication
- Multiple jobs can be enabled/disabled using CLI and API
- NAKIVO Backup & Replication system events can be filtered by dates and a search string
- With drill-down approach implemented, system settings can be accessed and identified easily
- Apache Tomcat engine is upgraded to Version 9.0 thereby fixing vulnerability issues
- Alarms for site recovery job are extended
- Running jobs for failed and stopped VMs propagates this scope to the chained jobs
- An option added to system settings for checking RAM on target host to be sufficient for replication and recovery jobs
- Min free space can be configured for the product folder in the expert mode
- A progress bar is implemented for reflecting backup export in the product activities
- A possibility added for removing all events in the expert mode
- The product migrated to VDDK 6.7.1 to improve support of vSphere 6.7 Update 1
New features added in the latest release:
- Policy-Based Data Protection
Policy-Based Data Protection is a unique functionality offered by NAKIVO Backup & Replication that simplifies data protection management in virtualized environment. The feature allows you to set up policies that regularly scan your entire infrastructure and protect VMs matching policy rules, with little to no manual input on your part.
Why Use Policy-Based Data Protection?
Policy-Based Data Protection relieves you from the need to chase new VMs or changes in your infrastructure. Once a policy is created, all the matching VMs are protected automatically. Whenever a VM’s status changes, the policy recognizes such change and excludes or adds the VM to jobs accordingly.
Administrators can now create policy backup jobs with a tagging rule. Is also possible to create a Backup policy to add all VMs with a specific amount of memory or Disk size.
NAKIVO Backup & Replication will automatically recognize any VMs that was added to your Virtual Infrastructure that matches any of the policies administrators created and add those VMs or instances to the Backup jobs that are connected to those policies.
With this option, administrators will not need to add manually any new VM that was created or added to your Virtual Environment.
As we can check in the next image policies can be created using; VM Name, VM Tag, VM Location, Datastore Name, VM Virtual Network, Size of VM, VM vMemory, Number of VM vCPU and VM Power State.
With any of these rules, administrators can create a backup policy job to back up VMs automatically without any intervention from the administrator. Any new VM that is created and match any of these rules (the policy that was created) will automatically be added to the backup job.
Note: Administrators can create more than one rule policy for their policy and in the same backup job.

- Universal Object Recovery

- SSL Certificate Installation
NAKIVO Backup & Replication in this latest version the ability to install an SSL certificate to allow a secure “https” connection.
Using SSL certificate NAKIVO provides a more secure web interface by using the https protocol. Customers can use self-signed NAKIVO certificate or import their own SSL certificate.

Nakivo Backup & Replication is a product that had significant improvements in the last year. Had a constructive grown in product features, much stability, and backup performance improvements.
By adding more SAN/NAS models to their direct backup, NAKIVO strength the back up from NAS portfolio and provides extra tools and better performance to customers when using backup direct from NAS.
Universal Object Recovery and Policy-Based Data Protection are two excellent and very useful features that were added to the latest version.
NAKIVO did also improvements in the UI (user interface) with a more easier navigation and user-friendly format. This is particularly important for large infrastructures where administrators need to deal with several objects in the inventory.
