Today after during our maintenance window to patch and update all our systems, I get on vCenter 6.7 VAMI unable to login after patch 3i. I patch my vCenters 6.7, and most of them had vCenter 6.7.0.44100 build 162.275304.
The version before the patch:
The latest vCenter Appliance 6.7 is vCenter 6.7.044200 build 16615482 from 30/07/2020, and all vCenters after applying I was not able to login to the vCenter VAMI and get unable to login.
The version after the patch:
The error:
I reboot a couple of times (some times this happens after a vCenter update) but still got the same issue.
Next, I checked vCenter services and notice that the service applmgmt (VMware Appliance Management Service) was stopped in some vCenter and others no.
I manually start the services, it did fix the issue, but if I reboot the vCenter, I get the same issue.
Solution
Checking the applmgmt log, I did not get much information. But found a VMware KB similar to this issue. Similar because I did not have those logs entries (at least the same values). So I try the solution. Since our vCenter VAMI root password had a “!” this could be the trigger for this issue.
Started the applmgmt service and changed the password (with no : or ! symbols).
After I did this change, reboot the vCenter and all was ok. All services were running, and I was able to login to VAMI without any issue even after a reboot.
I hope this blog post is useful if you have encountered this issue when upgrading your vCenter Servers.
